Lye bath

How long will a lye bath stay effective? Can it be rejuvenated by adding additional lye if it loses it ability to take off seasoning?
 
It has to be assumed that the chemical reaction will at some point be exhausted down the road. Time and number of pans and how cruddy they all are will all contribute to how soon you reach that point. My advice would be that, when you perceive a reduction in efficacy, you should drain it out and start fresh, as opposed to just "topping it up".
 
I Change mine about every 6 months when I am de-crudding, or when the crud doesn't slough off after a week.
10 gallons of water and 2 pounds of crystal lye in a plastic garbage can.
