Restoring damaged cast iron

Does anyone know anything about possibly restoring damaged cast iron? I was just able to get one of my griddles apart and it is missing a piece. It is missing a chunk on the side. I read the section about recasts and that might be a bit for the future. Has anyone tried that? Will it work if it is only a small piece missing that I am trying to "repair".

"Recast" refers to the use of an actual pan as a pattern from which to create a mold to cast a copy. Creating a heat source sufficient to melt iron to a liquid state is beyond the capability of the average individual. Repair of cast iron typically involves the use of another metal such as nickel to braze/weld broken parts back together, also something requiring professional services.
