19th Century Dutch Oven

Found this in a small town antique store. She was asking $29 but let me have it for half price.

I think that is a "C O" at 6 o'clock on the inside of the lid.

Missing the bail, but very interesting attachment spots (whatever you call them):

And nice sculptured feet:

If anybody recognizes the maker, please let me know!

Now that is a cool Camp Oven. I don't need one but I know where you can double your money after it gets cleaned up!

I think that one will stay in my personal collection. I think its cool, too. It was probably just somebody's home cookware, but I like to think of it being used from a chuck wagon on the prairie or in the Civil War. Hey... it could happen.

Got so excited about the DO that I forgot to mention a #3 Wagner and a unmarked single-notch Lodge that I got for $2.

I was able to find a picture of what seems to be the same pot online... but no information about it, aside from a different pattern number on the bottom (the guy doesn't have the original lid)

(He knows nothing about it... just a camper posting questions to a forum of campers.)

Hmm... Used out in the prairie or a chuck wagon? I sure could cook bake a killer Italian boule in that before the beef stew on oak coals. I'll double my bid.

I checked out John Tyer's Cast Iron Holloware from the library today, and from what he says about the ears and the foot designs, it is looking like this is from 1820-1840 (most likely the 1840's). That is preliminary... I'm still reading that section.

Considering that Minnesota was largely unsettled by the Europeans in 1840, that's pretty early for around here.

Got it cleaned up and seasoned last night. The black surface didn't seem to be simple seasoning... I suspect that it was charcoal that was applied to the hot metal when it came out of the mould. I understand they did that to smooth the surface.

Adding some detail pics.

The legs are basically square, with the outside-facing corners chamfered, making it more of a "D" cross-section:

The pin for attaching the ear pattern to the body pattern can be seen on the inside of the pot:

Been a while on this post, but I found an 11 inch DO identical in construction to the pics above. Marked 11 IN MG. Anyone ever nail down the date time frame on these?

Pat I also know it's a older post but still a killer old DO, just speaking for myself I'd like like to see what you found. I like some of the real old ones, they just scream history.

Check out how thick the bail is on my old Dutch oven. I hope to find a lid sometime. I also attached a pic of some of my older stuff.
