8 Quart Kettle ID ?

Picked this up recently --I see a gate mark, so I'm assuming 19th Century or earlier. There appears to be some sort of ghost mark near the gate mark and it looks like an "8".

The lettering appears to be somewhat crude : S & Co. 8 Qts.
The termination of the bail seems to have an 18th Century flair.

The inside needs some TLC, currently I have it soaking in a vinegar bath in hopes of reconditioning this cool old piece.

Does anyone have an idea of the origin/manufacturer of this fine old kettle ?

Difficult to hazard a guess as to who the "S" is. If there was also a city name, it could likely be narrowed down.

Judging by the picture the interior appears to be enamel coated with major damage. If so your TLC might be kind of ineffective.

I thought that too, but I believe it is a layer of crud and not enamel.

How early did they begin to coat CI with enamel ? I for some reason, thought that was a 20th Century innovation for cast iron hollow ware ?.

How long should the vinegar bath be allowed to sit ?

Thanks !
