A found a "junk" store off the beaten path ...

I saw this store on my way back from Chattsworth, GA on Wednesday. It was closed, but I stopped to see I could tell what kind of skillets he had hanging on the rafters outside. While I was looking around, the owner came out of his mobile home and let me look around. I ended up buying six skillets for $39.

Here is a link to some pictures I took in the store to show all of the skillets he had hanging around: http://imgur.com/a/1GBR9

Here are the ones I bought:

Some are so crusty, it's hard to see any markings on the back. What I think I have is: #7 single notch Lodge, three #6 Wagners, a #5 Wagner and a #5 Lodge (I thought it was a single notch, but on closer inspection, it probably is a 3-notch ... not sure why I added this one to the pile ... Maybe there were so many choices I got confused. HA!)

Also, not sure why I picked up three #6 wagners, except the fact that two of them were so crusty they piqued my curiosity and I wanted to get them home and clean them just to see what I would find.

There were a couple of more items I might get the next time I'm up that way.

I was tempted by this Wildlife series Lodge. Somebody painted the duck, but I'm thinking the paint would come off pretty easy. The one next to it is a Southern Mystery Skillet #8 (like my grandmother's #7), but I didn't want it becasue of the damage to the bottom.

And I was tempted by this #12 three-legged pot. But he wanted $30 for it and I don't have a lye tank or e-tank big enough to clean it. Looks like it had some green paint on it.

Well, Buyer Beware! I took the first three skillets out of the lye bucket to see how they were doing. So far I have ...

1. what will be a beautiful three-notch #5 Lodge. The interior surface looks silky smooth! I put it back in the lye to get off the remaining crud. (Boy, the cold weather really does affect the time required in the lye tank!)

2. A dagnab Wagner recast #6 ... This one will probably go to Goodwill.

3. A flippin' Wagner post-whatever, Made in the USA, incredibly pitted, #5. This one will probably go in the trash.

I sure hope the next three turn out better.

I don't mind getting a few duds if I didn't pay much for the lot. If the cooking surface is good, I restore them and use as give-aways to get newcomers interested. I do kind of feel a bit like a drug dealer giving away free samples because we all know how addicting this can be.

I agree. I wouldn't throw a pan in the trash. Someone that can't afford "collector" pans and just wants to have one to use would be happy to have it.

How about when you're done with your discovery, offer the unwanted items here and someone may want one for a display at least!

The one I'm thinking about throwing away is extremely pitted on the cooking surface. It's sitting on a shelf in my garage now. Maybe when I have time I'll work on it and see if it can be made into an adequate user to give away.

I've gotten some peg board, one side will be users and the other just displays of the different logos. As long as it has either a good cooking surface or a good logo I can find a use for it.
