I've been here about a year and a half now. I'm more of a user than a collector and I set some parameters around my acquisitions when I joined; that helped me keep things focused and limited. I've long since "finished" my collection but I've stuck around here, still visit daily. Partly due to my enthusiasm for the use of cast iron and cooking in general, partly to see if I can give back by helping when I can, but mostly to just observe and see what more I can learn.
A friend of mine who also cooks has seen all of my CI enthusiasm but avoided catching the bug himself. Instead, it took his wife asking for some CI pieces and he turned to me to understand the practical appeal of vintage over modern. Today he went on his first hunt.
His area seems to be a bit more rich in vintage CI than mine. With me providing a little bit of coaching when asked, he picked up two pieces. One was a #6 Griswold, which I hope I correctly identified as a SBL early handle circa 1939-1944. $10 seemed a decent deal, almost perfectly flat.
The other was a #10 3 notch lodge with Made in USA markings which I (hopefully correctly) dated anywhere from 1960 to 1987. Looking at sold ebay listings, his price of $25 seems an even better deal than the Griswold.
No e-tank, no lye, no oven cleaner. Just some vinegar solution and steel wool then a single seasoning using Canola at 350. Here's some pics of the Griswold, perhaps I'll add the Lodge later.
And he's going out hunting again tomorrow. A new enthusiast? We'll see...
