A Trip Up North

Made a trip about 100 miles north of me today. There is an indoor flea market that was having its last day for the season and I thought I might get some good last minute deals. But all I found were two pieces, neither of which interested me in the least. One was a very rusty Wagner anniversary dutch oven (without lid) for $40, and the other was a generic "Made in USA" piece, also badly rusted and more than I felt it was worth to me.

But... on my way there, I saw a sale going on... turned out to be a benefit sale. There was a lovely 10" Wagner griddle there, right in plain sight, for $2!! Pattern # is 1109C, if that tells you anything. It is the same griddle as on this eBay sale for $79.99: (link)

Then, taking backroads on my way home, I started to follow "SALE" signs. Seven miles later, I finally came to the sale. Not a piece of cast iron in sight. But I have been making it a habit to ask, anyway, and once again, it paid off. They guy said he had a couple pans that he hadn't put out yet.

One turned out to be a Lodge, which I passed on, but the other was a Wagner #8 that he let me have for $5!!

I already wrote elsewhere about picking up three rusted generics from a scrap yard for $5.

And then there's the little Wagner skillet ashtray that I over-payed for in an antique mall. I guess the ones that I've noticed going for high prices are Griswold's, not Wagners. Oh well... live and learn.

If I had only stopped at the griddle and skillet, I would have made out like a bandit! (of course, I did burn 3/4 tank of gas, but it was a gorgeous day for a drive in the north country of Minnesota)
