another e-tank thread

Sorry to start another e-tank thread but I have read back through the others and didnt find an answer to my question. I built an e-tank on saturday, and have since already built another one thats bigger with 4 plates so i dont have to rotate the piece. Its working really good, but im curious about the scum on top. Do most of you just leave it? or do you skim it off from time to time? my plates arent bad yet, and the rest of the water seems ok. Most of the nastiness from this pan went out with the first batch of water in the first tank. But i didnt know if skimming the scum off the top would prolong the water in the tank?

Also whats a reasonable expectation for time on cleaning a pan? i know theres a lot of variables. But i started with a pretty rusty pan and the 3amp charger i started with blew the rust off in 24 hrs. The new tank i hooked up a 6 amp charger to and its working good, but the very very thick seasoning on the cooking surface is coming off slowly but surely.

I find rust comes off very quickly, typically a couple hours or even less. Crud can vary from a few hours to several sessions of several hours to in some cases parts of it just won't budge. Don't worry about the scum.

I soak my items in lye first, then give them a good scrub. If there is stubborn crud or rust, I put them in the e-tank. This reduces the time and scum in the e-tank.

i havnt went to a lye tank yet. i went on my first CI hunting trip last weekend not really expecting to find much since i went to an antique store in my hometown. I was wrong, i brought home 4 pieces one of which was really rusty, and i had all the stuff laying around to throw together an e-tank so thats the route i went. I see a lot of others use a lye tank, so they must be worth having.
