Another interesting kitchen gadget

I found this old egg beater today, too. The upper part is iron, and there are words written on the wheel's spokes. I can't make them all out, but I could read this much (with a magnifying glass!)--"New Britain Mfg Co, Conn USA." There was a Pat. number, the word "Light," and "24 '08" also. Other words I couldn't make out.

Anyone have any ideas about it? (I have several old egg beaters that I've collected over the years and am fascinated that they all still work!)

That is so cool!

This weekend I made aebleskivers for my daughter using Hilditch's recipe. It calls for egg whites to be beaten until firm. I was asking my wife how they did that back before power tools. Now I know! Still, seems like it would take forever to beat them firm without my trusty hand mixer.

Actually, a hand beater is very efficient--you'd be surprised at how well they work. Maybe you'll pick one up yourself and give it a try!

Am having another jealously fit, Donna. That is so cool--and I bet it works better than the new ones! Congrats on your collection; metal kitchen ware beyond the CI pieces usually got trashed in usage.

Donna, your egg beater find has me checking out the kitchen utensils when I stroll through an antique store. I saw this the other day and almost bought it ... but decided to wait until I find one made of cast iron like yours.

I do love how this one has its own mixing container.

As I have made butter in butter churns, that looks like it would do the trick. Heavy cream to whipped cream to butter pretty fast. Not much, but one would get 1/2 lb. out of a pint.

Spurgeon, that is so cool! I'd have bought it for sure--I really like old utensils and crocks, etc. Let us know if it calls you back and you make butter with it!

Spurgeon, I've seen those no-spatter beaters before. Pretty cool idea, I thought! (BTW, I saw some CI beaters on eBay for not too much $, in case you're interested. At any rate, there are some really interesting ones on there.)
