Another Single Spout

The pictures are after the skillet was in the lye spa for about 24 hours.

It is a single spout with what appears to be the remnant of a gate mark. However, it has no heat ring.

Anyone seen anything like this?

If a recast, the original would have been thick as well, and a second gate mark would be expected. I'm not seeing the usual sloppiness/defects seen on recasts. If indeed a copy of an old pan, either old or not so old, it's apparently by someone with skills.

I have many gated skillets. Something seems off to me on this one. The smooth bottom and aggressive grind marks on and near the handle don't look right. My best guess is this is a very good and possibly older recast.

Its still a nice skillet and looks to be a good user.

I now think it is a recast.

Initially was optimistic it was "original". Especially since the handle is similar to the Single Spout shown in P Parker's post (Seeking ID).

Then realized, no heat ring. That prompted my question on P Parker's thread.

Now the skillet has been in the spa a few more days. It isn't completely clean, but a lot more detail is revealed.

I've included some closeups of different parts of the skillet. Think the most telling are the shots of the gate mark. Isn't the line perpendicular to the "original" gate mark the "second" Doug was looking for?

It also has a couple of "thumb" sized depressions on the cooking surface by the "wall". Not the quality I expected to see.

Now I know. No heat ring, no buy.

Thank you for your inputs.

Doug, referring to the pictures in my previous post, is the line perpendicular to the "original" gate mark a second gate mark? Now that more crude is removed, do you also think it is a recast? I don't think you were certain before.

I think the perpendicular line is just a casting flaw, and I'm not so sure the horizontal one is even a gate mark. I would examine the circumference of the lip of the pan for evidence of side gate grinding. May be difficult, as it appears the pan has been hit all over previously with a grinder or aggressive wire wheel.

Here it is after lye, electrolysis and initial seasoning.

I've tried to show the entire circumference. Some rough spots. I'll have to defer to the experienced group to vote whether any of them are from side gating.

The cooking surface is not flat and has a couple of depressions where the bottom meets the side. It is also a spinner.

All kinds of grinding marks (think that is what you would call them) are revealed after the crude was removed.

I assume the vote is recast. Correct?

It looks like every other single spout 'fancy handle' pan that I've seen except for the smooth bottom... never seen one quite like that. Still a very cool looking piece.. and it cleaned up really well.
