Are "Nexgrill" (Home Depot) skillets any good?

Hi everyone,

My Father decided, since I love cast iron, that he was going to be nice and buy me a "Nexgrill" 10" skillet at Home Depot.

I immediately didn't like it. The casting is awful, the seasoning reminds me of paint, and heated it smells like when I used to have to grind cheap Chinese cast iron at work.

Has anyone used these pans? I don't want to hurt the old man's feelings, but I might just try to return it to Home Depot even without the receipt.

Is lead contamination in cheap cast iron ever a problem?

Thanks ahead of time!

With the reports that surface every year or two about Chinese products being contaminated with something or other, many naturally assume the worst. The country of origin must be somewhere on the thing, and I presume it's not USA. There's no real way of knowing if there's a lead problem unless you have it tested. Too many other, better pans out there to be bothered doing so. If you can't return it, it would make a great anode for electrolysis cleaning.

My in-laws used to buy me cooking/grilling/smoking-related things as gifts. In the beginning, I'd return them (if possible) or sell them, then I finally just told folks "if you want to give me something, make it a gift card to Amazon or maybe a cookbook". Yes, a few (my MiL in particular) had hurt feelings about it, but my wife simply explained that I didn't want them to waste their money on things I wasn't going to use.

In your case, even if it means some hurt feelings, I think honesty is the best policy.

I would be surprised if there was any lead contamination during the manufacturing process, regardless of country. Don't smelters operate north of lead's boiling point? Also, it's not like iron is super expensive....
