Buying online thoughts

I've been looking at items online and have bought some that I'm waiting to receive. I was on a FB cast iron auction page the other day and a question was asked. Does shipping cost affect what you are willing to pay for an item? I was surprised at how many people felt that the price you pay is what the value of the item is and shipping was just off set for gas and search time.

I feel I have to add the item price and shipping together because that is the money I spent to get an item. I have passed on some small 3 skillets that I wanted, but not when the end cost would have been $30-40. I guess if I figure in the time and gas I have spent hunting cast iron, the stuff I have cost more than I realize. To me, the hunt is part of the fun. Gas money to ride around, but most of the time is spent with my wife and sometimes my daughter. Can't put a price on time with family.

What are your thoughts?
Does shipping cost affect what you are willing to pay for an item online?

I think your shopping time and gas (which is about 50¢ per mile all costs considered) falls in the entertainment cost category and has nothing to do with the value of an item as long as you are enjoying the time.

That changes when you bought an item on line and have to make a special trip to go pick it up. The special trip or shipping is now added to the cost of the item but not it's value. If the trip is 30 miles one way or $30 to get the item and shipping is $12 I let UPS do the time.

It pays to know shipping costs for online shopping. Some are outrageous and some are due to ignorance of the choices. This is where the 'value to me' comes into play as I add the price and shipping costs together to get the final cost. Value is highly subjective and subject to stupidity and abuse.

Like you said Shawn, family time is priceless.every time I go hunting my wife and my kids go with me,I like to say price is offset high because I add sh money to the price of item.
