Can anyone ID these markings?

I'm told this is a 1940s Lodge skillet. But the markings don't match anything I can find online. An unsteady looking "14" with a "(U.S.)" below it. Anyone know anything about this - the when, the manufacturer, the quality? See 2 attached photos. Many thanks.

More likely 1950s, but yes, Lodge. The (U.S.) has no connection to gov't or military, as is often assumed.

Thanks much - I understand that cast iron cookware was better pre 50s, and that 50s and post 50s = not so good, so I will not buy this piece.

Much appreciated.

If that piece has a polished cooking surface, is not warped, pitted, or cracked, and the price is right, it would be worth having. If you need a #14.

I agree with Doug, some of those old Lodges have really nice cooking surfaces on them and #14's don't come along very often. Do you have a photo of the cooking surface?

Thanks guys - here are pix of the cooking surface from ebay.
I have a #12 Good Health (Griswold, right?) skillet that I use all the time. Could a 50s Lodge be as smooth and stick-free and relatively light (for the size) as my Good Health skillet?
Do you think this 50s Lodge skillet is a good value at 125$? I just ordered a 13" Le Creuset skillet so it's not like I'm in desperate need of the Lodge. And there seem to be these 50s and later large Lodge skillets on ebay fairly regularly.

BTW - has anyone else noticed that there's a seller on ebay who listed about ten or twelve vintage griswold, favorite and wagner size 12 and 14 skillets a few weeks back - with various trademarks/logos on the backs that appeared legit? How could one seller have so many large vintage skillets for sale in so short a time? Is that weird? No big skillets listed by that seller just now. I didn't bid on any when they were listed - all at the same time - because I was worried by the fact that this seller had so many, I wondered if they could be knock-offs.

Thx again for your input!

That seller regularly has vintage CI for sale. His location has a lot to do with why so much HTF Griswold.

That #14 Lodge is not going to be light, but it will be a good user. $125 would be at the top end, IMO; it would need to be in perfect condition. There are others currently listed for $100 or less, which is more in line.

thx much - yeah, i think that Lodge 14 is listed at 99 bucks/buy it now, but add in shipping and it's 25$ more...

where does someone have to live to have access to dozens of 12 and 14 griswolds, piquas and wagners?

Steve, most likely a picker in the mid-west area of the country or southern. I imagine there's thousands of guys digging through scrap yards and back yards trying to hit it rich. Have you seen the show American Pickers? And some of the collectors they show their warehouse of stuff. I'm sure those guys are few and far between but wow, they're sitting on millions.

The seller lists his location in PA, which explains the Griswold. Ohio, home of Wagner and Favorite, isn't geographically that far from PA.

thanks for the info, Bradley.

Wow - so there are still people with a whole inventory of size 12 and 14 skillets... Amazing.
