Can years of cooking surface grease buildup look like pitting?

I was wondering if years of grease build up on the inside of a pan can make the cooking surface look pitted even if its smooth?

Thanks,
Mark

I have purchased pans that have appeared to be pitted but it was only the seasoning that was pitted. If you scrape your fingernail across it you can sometimes tell the difference.

It could be good seasoning over a pitted surface that has not filled in yet. More likely, owner 1 laid in some good seasoning. Owner 2 abused it with metal tools - especially a fork. The third owner was like the first but didn’t quite fill in the damage from #2.

Thanks you both for your opinions. I'll be willing to risk it for this pan then if the price does not climb too high.

My experience with ebay has been that if it looks pitted it probably is. I wouldn't take a chance on it unless you can pick it up and scratch it.
