Cleaning an enameled BSR #3 pan

Hi all ...

i have two BSR #3 pans - one plain iron, and one enameled. i've restored and reseasoned the CI pan, but haven't been able to figure out a way to clean the enameled pan without ruining the finish.

the inside enamel is fine - the exterior enamel has baked-on black stuff which has resisted all attempts at removal so far. i have not used steel wool, or any metallic scrubber so as not to damage the finish. Lye or oven cleaner would most likely damage the finish, and the enamel would never survive a trip through the self-cleaning oven cycle.

So, i'm stumped! Does anyone know a way to clean up this great, little BSR pan that leaves the exterior finish intact? Thank you in advance for sharing your secret knowledge! :)

Soak it in a pot of boiling water for a while then try scrubbing it. That stuff should come off pretty easily.

I clean all my enameled pots this way and I don't have any problems. I just use the green scrubbies, I don't use steel wool or anything that might scratch the enamel. A long soak in the hottest water and some Dawn dishsoap works for me.

Thanks Bonnie! the boiling water worked perfectly, and did not take long. here's a pic of the "new" pan ... i appreciate your knowledge very much!

Bonnie,
I picked up a vintage #24 Le Creuset Pan yesterday for four bucks. The handle is wooden but I think it unscrews. The bottom is enameled completely but the cooking surface is all bare iron. Would this method work with my pan or should I do something different?
Thanks,
Kyle

No MD, but it is the exact one below that skillet in "similar items" only mine is brown. The cooking surface is iron but the bottom is enameled.

Michael, thanks for your link to Le Creuset pans. I just ID'ed my unmarked enamel skillet which has been used so very hard as our egg frying skillet! Well, due to Bonnie's answer to Kyle's question, I'll try the boiling water soak. I think my pan is too far gone in use to clean up, but will surely give it a try. Once again, the forum and members have come through with useful info. and helpful ideas. Thank you so much folks!

Sherman, that looks much nicer, good job. :icon_thumbsup: Kyle, I would do your pan the same way but I would add some vinegar to the mix to discourage rusting while it soaked. You could also just float the pan so that only the bottom is soaking depending on how bad it is.
Sharon, I have cleaned enameled pans that were completely black all over the outside this way. I just keep changing out the boiling water when it gets too cold. I don't like to work to hard so if the stuff doesn't come off easily I just let it soak longer. Sorry for the delayed response but for some reason I can't reply to posts from work anymore.

For years, I have put a little dish soap in water in my crusty pan and boiled it until I could get the crust off before washing. This was before I even discovered CI....
