Cleaning cast iron pieces with wire bails

Wondering what is the best method to use for cleaning waffle iron base that has a wire bail. There is some rust built up and don't want to do any that might hurt the wire. I was planning to use electrolysis and just want to make sure before I get started. Any help and advise would be greatly appreciated.

Neither electrolysis nor lye will hurt the steel wire bail on a WI base or dutch oven. A self-cleaning oven cycle is to be avoided, however, as the high heat will typically be enough to adversely affect the temper.
 
Thank you so much Doug. Probably going to wait till spring before I get stated. High temps in the 20's and lows in teens. Good time to look for more iron to clean.
