Did I damage my skillet using vinegar and water?

I posted yesterday about my recent BSR purchase. I've been doing a little more research about how long to soak a rusty pan in vinegar and water solution. I'm starting to think that I may have messed up my pan by leaving it in the soak too long. I've tried oven seasoning it 3 times using grapeseed oil. But the pan still feels very dry and like sandpaper. It is getting darker, but it is so rough that it is shredding my cotton lint-free clothes when I apply oil to it. And the handle is dry and like sandpaper as well. Am I just being paranoid? I know everyone recommends that I just cook with it and it will get smoother. This wasn't a super expensive investment ($15), but I was hoping it would be like my other two BSRs which are much older and very non-stick. Sorry for another post, but I wanted to ask more about the vinegar/water soak and what 3-4 days of soaking might do to the pan. Thanks for your time.

Do you mean rough, or sticky kinda? If its sticky I would say you put too much oil or whatever on it, I had it happen to me....I dont think it would hurt it tho, but what do I know? Hope you find out, nice pan still.

I woud re-strip it, using whatever means. I use Easy Off oven cleaner in a bag, works pretty good if you let it sit for days. Then then season it again. . It COULD be the grape seed oil? I just use Crisco, a few times, and its good to go. I think youll be fine if you strip it.

Hmm. Not sure what that would do. I've already stripped it using Easy Off. The problem was I then soaked it in vinegar and water. How will re-stripping it fix anything? Maybe I'm missing something...

Re stripping it won't help but it won't hurt. With that long of a vinegar soak you have seriously etched the iron. A few hours in the 50% solution should be more than enough for just about anything. Always check on it every 30 minutes or so. I had a particularly nasty piece that I let soak for nearly 24 hours and etched it badly, I'll never do that again. If you need that kind of cleaning then I suggest an electrolysis setup instead. After several layers of seasoning I can still feel the roughness in my pan, I imagine that it will all fill in some day. Season your pan a few more times and use it, use it, use it.
