Doug H's little kettle

This pot might be part of what I've seen identified as a fireplace starter unit.
The pot held kerosene and would have a lid with a slot in it. There's a metal rod with a handle and a stone-like material at the opposite end that sits in the kerosene and absorbs it. The user would ignite the end of rod and put it into the kindling in a fireplace. These units are heavier than they look, considering your observation on its weight.

I'm away from home for a few days, but will check my unit out and if it's similar to yours, I'll send a few pictures.

That seems like a good possibility...When you have a chance, I'd love to know if it seems like a match. Let me know if any more pics or information about mine would help answer any questions!

So, I've attached pix of my fireplace starter unit, as I described earlier. I've seen similar pots around, without the accessories.

My pot alone measures 5 1/2" high by 5 3/4" wide at the base and weighs 6 1/2 lbs.

Looking at your pictures and mine, I think you've nailed it. I haven't taken measurements or weight on mine, but your measurements sound about right for mine as well. Here's pics of mine again to compare:

Thanks for identifying this for me. It's still going to be a decoration item for us, but I really enjoy knowing it's purpose and history.

I would think this is what your unit is. I'll bet there's a cover and even a rod out there somewhere in an "unknown" parts box. I found my three parts spread out in various places in a yard sale, but I knew what the whole unit looked like, so the search was like doing a three piece puzzle..

Good luck, and I'm pleased I may actually have been able to identify something.
