E tank question

Looking to set up an e-tank to clean some recent acquisitions. I've been through lots of good info on this site but I do have one quesiton: should the point where the live cables contact the metal be above the surface of the liquid or below? I've seen pictures that show both.

The positive should be above the water line, but the negative can be above or below. If the + is below the waterline it becomes sacrificial & will be eaten away.

It still works both ways. But keeping the charger's clamps out of the water will also prevent headaches up the road. Any corrosion that develops on them will result in poor connectivity, increased resistance, excessive heat, etc.

I keep my positive above water to keep it from being sacrificed. I like to connect my negative directly to my skillet handle (or part of whatever other piece I may be cleaning). Therefore, my negative is below water line since my cast iron is all below the water line. I have done several hundred pieces this way, going months at a time with the etank running 24 hours a day- 7 days a week. it is true that I have had to replace the negative clamp maybe 3 times in the past 2 years, but I believe that is a small price to pay to assure good contact with the part. Just my 2 cents.

I attach my negative to a nail at one end of the stick I hang my skillet from, with copper wire wrapped from that nail to another one above the skillet. I have a hook hanging from that nail/copper wire to the skillet. I figured it would keep the negative from falling into the water when my wife forgets and hits my bucket with the car.
