"Excited"...Skillet Oven

I just found out today that I have purchased an extremely rare Wagner Ware Skillet Oven #1275-1 & 1275-2, PAT'D. Aug. 10 - 1920. I found it at a local garage sale this past weekend (covered w/ crud) and have spent the last two days trying to find out information about it. I was beginning to think it was a fake until I called my cousin which has the BB & RB and she found it on page 238 of the BB. I have started some cleaning but want to take my time even though the skillet is at least a 9 1/2 on a scale of 10. It looks as though it has never been used. For a $20 purchase I feel like I just won the lottery. What excites me more is that my cousin said that the unit should set on a base or ring. I just posted a thread two days ago regarding a cast iron ring that I had no idea of its use and I now believe it is the ring/base for my skillet. Since the lettering on the skillets is raised it now makes sense why it should be elevated to keep from wearing the lettering. I have already did a trial fit and the skillet sets perfectly inside the ring. I am posting three pic's with this thread of what it looked like before any cleaning and hopefully post some more once cleaned and seasoned. https://picasaweb.google.com/114772661409714296598/MDFraley#6168908167643725826 https://picasaweb.google.com/114772661409714296598/MDFraley#6168908174660090258 https://picasaweb.google.com/114772661409714296598/MDFraley#6168908167568368722

This is the pattern referenced on the piece: http://www.google.com/patents/US1349494 However, it has more to do with the concept than the actual Wagner design. The BB talks about a base ring, but does not show one. It would be nice if the ring you also have could be proven to go with the Wagner.

Congrats on your great score. :icon_thumbsup: I see the oven in the BB but I can't see the pics on your picasa link. Maybe I am doing something wrong.

No..It's not you....I used the same tech. the day before and for whatever reason I simply can't get the photos to copy over. I've gone back and read Doug's instructions several times and it's just not working and I don't want to make more of a fool of myself than what I already have. Wish there was a more simple method such as copy and paste for photo sharing.

Doug...My cousin took a cell phone picture of the drawing and sent to me and like you the actual skillet is not like the drawing. I assume that the biscuit-like insert was abandon for a more simple design. She looked in the book for further base like pieces but could not find one. She read the quote in the book that said "This unit should set on a base or ring" which made me think that the ring I bough may possibly be for this skillet but I can not prove it without sound data. Was hoping you experts could somehow lead me to something I could further research in my spare retirement time.....

I've been browsing older posts, and was wondering if you have any updated photos or other information on your neat find, MDFraley. Maybe pictures of the oven with the mysterious ring?

Not to put water on your fire, but we need to look at something here. Years ago most kitchens still had wood / coal cook stoves. Some of the eyes on the stoves were to large for some skillets / pots. I am thinking that your ring was made for everyones stoves. I have seen that ring before. I am thinking that it was talked about here on the forums in the past.:icon_scratchchin:

Back to your skillet oven. It is a very nice piece and you did a nice job cleaning and seasoning it.:icon_thumbsup:

Found it; http://www.castironcollector.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2352 :covri:
