Fabulous antique store finds!

I hit the jackpot today! I found all these skillets in one stall in an antiques store just this morning. They're all going in the lye bath now, and then onto seasoning in a couple days. There is no rust on any of them.

There are two #3 skillets - one Wagner Ware (Sidney -O-), and one Martin Stove and Range. There are two #6 Wagner Ware (Sidney -O-) skillets, a #7 Griswold Erie PA, and #8 BSR. I can't wait to start cooking in them!

I just increased my cast iron collection by 50%. Happy me! :icon_thumbsup:

Fantastic! I hope it didn't set you back too much $$$$$.

hey Mark,

Thanks! I was super pleased to come across all this treasure in one place.

And, it was a deal! total was $139 at the register, including sales tax. average $23 per skillet. i always work on averages. :)

You actually should have been able to do a bit better on about half of them, the BSR in particular. The #7 Griswold, however, is IMO about a $50 piece already cleaned up and if no damage or defect.

Hey Doug,

No doubt you're right, and i have been paying less and less per piece as i build up my collection. With these six skillets, I'll have seventeen total skillets, and a variety of Dutch ovens, muffins pans and griddles. I can be much more discriminating about what I'll pay, now that i have a 'sufficient' collection. I paid a bit more than best-price to get the collection going ...

Actually, I passed up a 14" Lodge skillet in the same antique store - $60. That was way too much, as it was not an old skillet at all. Earlier, i may have gone for it, but i am getting to know my wares, and what they're really worth.

Live, Learn and Cook. :)

And yes - the #7 Griswold is in very fine shape: no rust, flat bottom, no defects, clean and usable as is, but i am lye-bathing and reaseasoning it nonetheless.

Sherm--yay you! An average of $23 per skillet would be way good out here in the Seattle area. I envy you that Martin!

Hi Donna,

Thanks!! $23 per skillet is pretty good here in Santa Cruz, too. :). As Doug pointed out, it's possible to do better, but I am still on the "building" phase of my CI collection. With today's six pans, i now have seventeen skillets, from size 3 to size 12, from a variety of foundries, and with missing size numbers to fill in as i go. Fun, fun!

I'm looking to get at least one piece from as many iron foundries as i can, and at least one skillet in every size. I was thrilled to find the #3 Martin - it's the first piece i have by them, though now i have four #3 skillets. :)

The best deal i have gotten so far is a #3 enameled BSR skillet from the Grey Bears Thrift Store - $3! I think they did not know what they had ...

Happy collecting!

I'm jealous! Love the Martin and I've been looking for a #7 Griswold LBL for a long time! For some reason I have a hard time finding #7s.
