First skillet

I was going through my CI today and found this skillet, it may not look like much but it is the one that started my obsession. About 5 years I googled how to cook a steak and many of the recipes suggested a CI skillet so not having one I went to the local Junk store and found this one for 20 dollars which was very high considering the condition it was in. I didn't have a clue on how to clean it and when the wire well was proving useless a neighbor suggested a bon fire, so not knowing better at the time in the fire it went, it came out very clean and with a crack on the side. Lesson learned. I used this pan for 4 years before buying another one at a thrift store, it has been a great user even with the crack until someone decided to use it to cook spaghetti sauce in it and left it in the fridge overnight. I think I will season it again and retire it.

Always sad to retire an old favorite. Why don't you just get the crack welded and keep on using it? My favorite Gris has gone that route and is just as good a user as always.

I would burn them off for the longest time, I figured how did the old timers get that carbon off? Mountain men would leave their DO's in the coals then reseason nightly. I think that's the key, not a bonfire which can easily spike in temp or distribution of heat. But I've been dragged kicking and screaming into the modern age, electrolysis is King here.
