Marked on the bottom: "Erie", 810, 7A, PATD MAR 10 91

The "10" may be a poorly rendered "18"?

Blue book mentions that flat bottom kettles older than the slant TMed one pictured in the text exist, but not a whole lot else. Anyone have an idea on date of manufacture for these? I'd guess based on other Erie branded items somewhere between 1891 and 1905? I don't have a RB, so there may be more information there.

Here is a picture of my flat bottom kettle. I haven't finished cleaning and seasoning this one. Finding lids for these is difficult because they don't seem to fit anything else, it has to be the lid made specific for this kettle and those lids are more expensive than the pan. :frown:

Doug, the patent indicates a lid for these kettles. I've never seen one for an older kettle like mine, and didn't find any advertisements for one prior to 1938. Do you know if lids for these Erie branded flat bottoms were ever manufactured?

Griswold Bulletin E-10, 1926, shows sizes 6-10 and notes shipped without covers unless ordered with. The illustration shows what appears to be a typical CI cover, nothing like that shown in the patent. Sizes 6-9 are shown in a catalog estimated 1912-1915 with no mention of lids.

So most likely no matching lid hiding around for this piece? It's interesting that the lid was shown in the patent illustration. Also, this may not be as old as I originally thought. This ad from '21 seems to indicate that the flat bottom kettles were still Erie branded, although wouldn't that be very late for a piece this large to be produced without the block logo?

I'd say them being called Erie in 1921 had more to do with a poorly updated dealer catalog than Griswold still branding them that. P/N 810 #7 FBKs are seen with Slant Erie TM. P/N 868 is the cover you're looking for.

Assuming that cover was made with this kettle? I'm not in a hurry to find one, I think. This will be a bean pot, most likely.

I have the same size flat bottom kettle, but with the Italic "GRISWOLD" logo.

If I am not mistaken the lid for the #7 is the standard #7 DO lid.

I was looking through a Bear catalogue pre-1915 and found something interesting. The aluminum flat bottom kettle was sold with or without lid, but the iron kettle did not have a lid. I assume the patent applied to both materials?

Also, here is the kettle after seasoning, for what it is worth.
