Good Day at the Auction!

Scored a Griswald made puritan #8 for $7.50, a Griswald crispy corn pan for $7.50, and a Favorite piqua #3 that came with what I think is a 3 notch lodge #5 for $5 for the pair. The Favorite has been painted, but it will clean up nice.

More than good for $20, I'd say. The Puritan piece is a good find.

Thank you! As soon as I got home i cleaned it up with soap and water. Then oiled it real good and fried 2 eggs in it for an egg sandwich for lunch. It preformed flawlessly.

I started the Crispy corn pan in an electrolysis bath. A closer inspection of it revealed that it had been painted and had rust under the paint.

I scrubbed the paint off of the inside of the Favorite to get the paint off of it.

I currently have the Puritan, Favorite, a previously owned Wagner #3 and a different 3 notch lodge in the oven seasoning now. Just trying to add alittle more seasoning to them.

There is another auction that starts at 5 today that has more cast iron in it that I may go see if I can have more luck at.

That's a nice little group for a little bit of money and I agree with Doug that Puritan is a nice skillet. I would love to add one of those to my kitchen at some point, the only one I ever seen was cracked and I actually thought about buying it anyway. I had visions of using it to make a wall clock.... Great find....

Well, a sad update on the Favorite #3. I decided I wanted to strip it down to bare metal and remove the crispy flaky layer from the outside. I put it in the E tank. to loosen the majority of it. It worked well. Bad news is it revealed a 3/4" crack on the side wall of the poor little guy. I think it will still be usable and will probably barely be noticeable.

I also ground the 3 notch lodge to a smooth finish on the cooking surface. now I can start weeding out the import skillets with some of a little higher quality untill they can be replaced with ones even better. Ive got some friends that are intrigued by cast iron. Those well used and ready to cook skillets will be the perfect starter pieces to get them going.

The Lodge, by it's marking style, should have already been factory polish ground. They didn't stop until some time after pans were being marked Made In USA.

I was going to say that I thought it was painted as well... I've done a couple of painted pieces and find that usually whoever did it didn't really put a lot of effort into prepping the piece before they painted it. I've been working on a #9 Griswold dutch oven that had been painted... I was a little worried about what I would find under the paint (they painted the dutch oven, lid and trivet)... so far so good, no cracks... and other than some stubborn carbon on the outside of the sides of the dutch oven it is coming down to bare iron and cleaning up nicely... the inside is perfect and it looks like they even painted the inside of the lid, even though it was enamel.
