Griswold Chrome #9

Hi - new to using cast iron pans. I was able to safe this from my friend who was going to throw it in the dumpster. My husband cleaned it up but needing some help on figuring out exactly what we have in regards to it being quite collectable/valuable or not.

It is a Griswold #9 778 which according to this site it is a duo chrome. The lid is a 1099A. We weren't sure about the inside bottom if this devalues it or it is supposed to be like this after cooking in it?

Any further info would be wonderful!

Thanks!

Glad you saved that pan Michelle! It is beautiful, and I still can't get over what people will trash.:icon_scratchchin: Other folks here on the forum can you give you further info. on proper cleanup, etc. I think you have a good use pan which is probably also considered collectible--the lid helps too. Thanks for another rescue!

Chrome plating for a mirror finish required polishing the iron smooth first. The bottom and underside of the handle wouldn't have really mattered, so that's why they're like they are. DuChro was a little bit different. It was a finish with smooth areas left intentionally dull/matte. The cooking surface on this pan was originally chromed as well, but has lost plating due to usage. The real find here, though is the lid, lids often being more valuable than the pans they fit.

Thanks Doug. So in other words, the pan isn't much value at all except the lid? Disappointment but we will still use it. I tried to look on ebay and online for a #9 778 but no luck.

Collectors typically prefer bare iron pans in EX condition over ones with compromised plating. Bear in mind, though, that unless found NOS, one would expect the wear seen on this one. It is use, not abuse or damage. Yes, the lid is potentially worth more than the pan it sits on, but the set is still worth more than the sum of the pieces individually.
