Griswold Flat Bottom Kettle

I've left my name and telephone number in area businesses that occasionally have cast iron, asking to contact me when pieces come in.

I got a call a few weeks back that a business had taken in "a pile of cast iron" in trade for some furniture and they were holding it for me. I regret I didn't take a camera, because the CI was on a rounded-over pile on a pallet.

I ended up with 32 pieces; an assortment of skillets, DOs, various pots and kettles, almost all Griswold and Wagner. Here's what I think is the prize of the bunch:

There's something to be said for one-stop shopping, but picking up a piece here and there gives you the thrill of the hunt without the pain of a big expenditure…

All the pieces were in pretty good condition, with no rust but varying amounts of crust. I'm really anxious to clean them all up, but have got a few too many plates spinning right now to do this.

Here's an ERIE kettle that's finished:

And here's one that hasn't been cleaned up that I am pretty excited about. A big addition to my small collection of odorless pans and kettles.

The kettle itself is 10" high and 12 1/2" wide (OD) at the top. I really like the look of an eccentric bottom and getting it with its tin cover is a real bonus.

Frosting on the cake would be hearing from someone who knows its maker!

I am think that they are from the same foundry.

Doug, thanks so much for the patent info. I'll try to explore the Fred. Hill connection and maybe this is a New England made kettle.

Jeff, looks as if our kettles are indeed related. All the same patent date info and wording, just that the writing is located in different places relative to the "tube". I'd say mine is the older, since it has a gate mark. I'll put your missing cover on my giant list of things to be looking for.
