Griswold. Is it Unused Factory Finish or Painted?

Hello. I picked up a Griswold #8 waffle iron complete with just a few spots of what I call dust rust. Was told it's never been used. It is a egg shell color black, looks somewhat dull polished. Is this how they looked when new or did I get one with the paint job? I don't see any indication of paint wear or scratch's on the moving parts. Thanks
 
New, never used should look like bare gray iron. Maybe some discoloration if there was a factory lacquer or pre-seasoning applied.The bases were japanned black, but not the paddles. A photo would help.
 
Thanks Doug. I believe you hit the nail on the head! Would you leave the lacquer? If not what process could I use to remove it? Thanks again.
