Griswold lid

When I bought this lid last year it looked like a boat anchor. I only bought it because I liked the shape of the handle. I've been working on it off and on and each time I do it looks a little nicer. I know it's not ever going to be smooth and shiny but I am thinking it never was. Was this DO lid a rough casting?

I have the same lid, and, yes, it would have been left "as-cast". The joint at the edge between lid and pan could have been ground to form a better seal, but maybe not on lids this early.
