Griswold New American waffle iron

Just picked this up at a yard sale. How do you remove the wood handles so I can put it in the lye tank with out damage to them?

There is a little nail or pin holding it in place. I pulled mine out with a pair of needle nose pliers.

There might be crud down in the holes on the handle covering the nail head. You might have to scrape a little back to find the head of the pin.

Not sure about that. The handles don't look original to me. Might be just pressed in.

If they are pressed in they should just twist out I would think.
By the way, that is a really nice waffle iron.

Thanks for the quick response! I will follow my 43 years of married bliss and look for the nail, then with out hesitation I will follow Dougs advice. Thanks Tom
