Griswold Trivet Question

Happened upon a 1726 "tree of life" trivet and got it, because, well, I need trivets so why not get a cool one?

Question is, how were they originally finished. Were they painted, or bare/seasoned like a skillet?

OK... This one looks like just flat black stove paint. It's in a condition that I'm torn whether I even want to do anything with it or just use it as is.
