Were the Griswold trivets originally painted. I have just cleaned a No. 1729. Do I paint or season it?

I seasoned 3 of them with Crisbee. It worked fine. I want to try to collect a few more. They're so cool! All mine have a Griswold Stamp and model number but i've seen them with a wilton stamp and also unmarked, not sure what the history is or if they're valuable but they sure are useful!!

Here is a Griswold that has one heavy coat of lard. HD has a drawer of misc. plastic and rubber feet that work great on CI trivets.
