I have recently picked up a Griswold waffle iron. I am having trouble finding info. on it.
on one half of it I see,
pat. June 29 1880, pat July 25 1893 both in half moon shape next to the hinge.
in the center on top no 8, on bottom 8 & 9

on the other half,
Griswold mfg. co. next to the hinge in half moon shape.
the American in the middle
Erie pa on bottom half moon also

finger hinge, no part numbers on the iron or base

any info would be greatly appreciated
thank you

The BB dates the finger hinge irons to 1890, kind of odd considering the 1893 patent date shown on it. It's one of the earliest Griswold irons, though, from a time when they had not yet begun using pattern numbers. If all in good condition, it represents a valuable find.

Troy, I have the exact same set as you described. The finger hinge was the first Griswold that allowed the separation of the irons for cleaning and followed the button hinge. Next was the acorn hinge in the late 1890’s.

The best that I can determine is that the wood handles extended out 3” beyond the iron, a bonus compared to the 1 3/4” on the button hinge models.

Doug D. there are two patent dates on mine ,
June 29 1880 and July 25 1893.

Thank you to all for your responses I am new to CI collecting.
What is the BB ?

Kyle if I find a nice waffle iron ill contact you.

Yes, it does, but it means the piece would have to have been made after the latest patent date inscribed on it. In all likelihood, the iron may have been first produced with only the earlier date on it, and the later added after. The first is actually a Selden & Griswold patent.

BB = Book of Griswold & Wagner aka Blue Book.
