Griswold waffle maker questions

Hello all! I recently acquired a Griswold waffle maker and would like to find out more info about it. The paddles are 885/886R, and the low base is 884. Patented Dec. 1, 1908, ball hinge.

Is this the correct base for these paddles?
Is 1908 the year this was produced, and if not, can anyone narrow it down for me?
Does the blob of iron by the 885 stamp indicate repair, or is it original?

I own a few of my grandmother's cast iron skillets but this is my first "find". I know nothing about identifying, dating, etc. Any help would be appreciated!

Doug, so the base IS a match? In the link provided above, it says a 975 or 985 is the base match for 885/886...I haven't found any info on 884.

Here's a few more pics.

Yes and no. A base marked 884 originally supported a finger hinged set of paddles. There are also two bases marked 884 which fit acorn hinged paddles. Although it would make more sense for an 884 base to go with paddles marked 885 and 886, it doesn't, even though it apparently fits and works. An 884 base is more commonly found with and considered a match for an Alfred Andresen set of paddles, which also happen to be made by Griswold. So, while you do have a Griswold set of irons and a base made by Griswold, they don't appear to have ever been sold as an original set.

My finger hinge bases are very different from the 884 and the irons handle side slot was squared off so the handles could sit flat. They have no markings. I believe the 884 was designed for the acorn hinge irons but wasn’t snug enough for the ball hinge irons so the pattern numbers were bumped up with the changes to the cup.

I would really appreciate pictures of these two types of hinges side by side, if anyone has both to share.
