Griswold with Japaned Black. REMOVE it or NOT?

Hello. I have a Griswold waffle iron that appears to have a Japaned black finish. Should I remove it and if so how, or leave it as is? First I've seen one like this. Any sign that would indicate counterfeit or was this a normal finish? Thanks in advance for all opinions and suggestions!

The paddles themselves would not have been japanned, only the base. Not necessarily an indication of counterfeit, just more of poor judgement on the part of a previous owner. Lye or electro should take it off.
