Griswold's Erie

Day before Thanksgiving I was at a local antique shop and run upon a Griswold bowl that was labeled GRISWOLD'S ERIE in an arc top section of the heat ring with ERIE being just under GRISWOLD with the number 781 below ERIE and No. 3 at bottom center and PAT'D. MAR. 10. 91 at the bottom of the arc. They were asking $75 for it but I didn't pull the trigger on it. Came home and checked my BB and only found the pattern number listed on page 317 but no pictures within the book. Searched it and there were several listed on eBay and one exactly like the one I saw with exception of the crack on the eBay listing. I checked our Cast Iron home page and see that it says the Griswold's Erie was dated between 1905-1906. I went back this morning and offered $60 for it which they accepted. I thought it was a fair price but now I am not sure since I can't gauge it from any of the listings I've looked at....
Any comments yea or na?

How is the condition? Does it have the ring and the bail? I would think if the condition is good that that is a fair price.

I would class it as good condition. On the bottom inside the heat ring there is one small area that has slight pitting but does not stand out nor impair the lettering in any way. The bail and tipping ring are in excellent shape with no rust anywhere on the kettle. That was the second deciding factor when I bought it.

I thought the 1905-6 was for the Griswold slant large logo, not an arc. Maybe both?

I checked under Trademarks and Logos and simply repeated what it said for "Griswold's Erie" and that confused me a bit since it had the Pat'd. date as Mar. 10/91 on the kettle.. Can I also assume this is Griswold's "Scotch Bowl" since that was how it's described in the BB ?

On page 154 of the red book I see a Griswold arc 783 that says 1888-1904. This bowl doesn't have a patent date on it and the value says 100-125$.

Does it look like this one? It looks like the bids got up to $50 but never met the reserve so it didn't sell.

That's it.....I also saw one on eBay that had the crack I mentioned in my original post which was also the same as the link you attached. Now that you know what it looks like tell me more if you can....

I don't know anymore. I only saw the info in the red book for the #5 with no patent date on it, I thought that was strange because the book usually provides values for all sizes. I can tell you I think it's a cool bowl and I like the smaller sized scotch bowl more than the big ones.

Thank you very much.....I will try and post pictures when I get my camera back to working properly. The bowl is in the lye bath presently. It had some sludge build-up on the outside but not as much that I have cleaned in the past. Insides are smooth no pitting or rust so it should clean up and be a keeper.

I own a scotch bowl just like you described. I will post a pic later.

I am very new to this forum so please take with a grain of salt whatever I type but the price you paid seems fair. I am a collector of user cast iron and a scotch does not fit into my cooking regime but it sure looks good and is often asked about when folks come to the house.
