Having a hard time with rust color.

I bought a BSR cornbread skillet the other day. It’s been in the lye bath since Saturday. It has cleaned up nicely. Every time I take it out of the lye bath, scrub and wash it, it looks great. But as soon as it dries it turns a rusty color. Just for fun I put a little grease on it, and a lot of the rusty color stuff came off on my rag. I used another rag to take the extra grease off, that one too collected the brown rusty color.

Any help appreciated

When you finish cleaning it in the water, use cold water to rinse it off and immediately wipe dry. Place in oven at 200°F to thoroughly dry before adding oil. This should solve your problem.

CI oxidized (rusts) quickly with water on it, especially warm water.

My gas oven in Georgia, and also out west, when first turned on, adds a lot of humidity to the oven - the glass in the door gets saturated with moisture. It takes close to 10 minutes of heating for the moisture to be eliminated.

Thank you all. As always, you are correct. Yes, I live in Georgia.

The first pic is after one cleaning,
Next two are after washing and cleaning in cold water.

Last two are after first round of seasoning

Re-read what I typed. It doesn’t sound right

I meant to say, as always you guys are right. I followed your instructions in the pan came out perfect.

The part about Georgia was just a side note. Thanks again

Looking good. I live in GA also just without a gas stove unfortunately. I have the same pan. I word of advice when cooking with it, preheat the pan then add oil and batter. This will help with sticking and cleanup.

The pointed ends of the cornbread pan is the most difficult to clean of sticking occurs.
