I run across ones like this with some frequency. They are recasts, although they use more modern casting technology than the typical bottom gated recasts. They appear to be from any number of original makers' pans and usually share the trait of a notably heavy, thick bottom. I theorize it may be the result of shaving a layer of sand from the sand mold cavity in order to remove the markings the pan used as a pattern would have left. The missing sand makes the cavity larger and it takes more iron to fill it.
