Here's why you don't clean cast iron by putting it in a fire

I saw this poor griddle today and thought y'all might like to see an example for what can happen when you put cast iron in a fire. By the way, the store was trying to sell it like this. They wanted $14.95!

It might be hard to see in these first two pictures, but the griddle was insanely warped. Almost like they had tried to fold it like a taco.

Thanks for sharing. Do you know the manufacturer and the time frame of when it was made? I have a similar #8 griddle that I was wondering about.

Sorry, I don't. This one felt very thin and light. It had a raised 7 on the handle and a gate mark. I own one just like it and it's great for pancakes.

I am new here but I do know a little bit about metal. I do not think that the pan would have warped if it was heated evenly and gradually. The warp happend because the different areas of the pan expanded at different rates. If it was brought up to temp slower and allowed to heat evenly this would not have happened.

I'd say the warp here wasn't the result of uneven heating, but rather of the iron getting so hot it began to soften.
