How should I clean this?

I found a little Wagner Ware aluminum DO trivet the other day, and it has what appears to be a carbon deposit on it. I'm thinking lye would be bad for it. What about an e-tank (which I don't have)? I've scrubbed to no avail....
 
Wow, thanks for the link! Interestingly enough, the page showed an aluminum trivet just like the one I was asking about. :icon_thumbsup:
