I saw this Griswold Scotch Bowl today. What is it used for?

I saw this bowl today. They were asking $50 for it, so I didn't get it. Plus, it looked like it had a fair amount of pitting in the bottom of the bowl.

I was wondering though, what is it used for? Maybe you hang it in the fireplace and make soup?

I'll be passing by that store again in a little while ... what would be a fair price for it? And is it worth buying with the pitting? (Not sure you can see it in the picture.)





 
Well, now that I'm home and have had a chance to search these forums for posts about Scotch Bowls (and to find some recipes online), I wish I had bought it. Ha! Maybe they would have taken a cheaper price if I had worked on it a little. Still, the pitting in the bottom is a little more than I would like.
