ID Help #12 Camping DO

Hello everyone. I was wondering if I could get your help with a couple of questions on my camping DO. I think it is lodge and I think it is a matching set. But the raised 12 on the oven is more stylistic and almost twice as big as the one on the lid. It also has an F in between the 1 and the 2 and the lids does not. I am curious if I am right with the lodge. If so how old? I am also curious if it is a matching set. It fits right but 12's do not look the same. It is almost 4 inches deep and is 12 inches across. I added a picture of the "ears" to help with identification. Thanks guys.
Kyle

The more I look at and clean this oven the more I am feeling it is a fake. Any thoughts from anyone? The casting is a little rough in a few places. I am getting it ready for camping next year and I don't enjoy cooking with a piece fully until I have as much information on it as I can get. Any thoughts would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Kyle

Kyle, I think the lack of response means nobody knows for sure and that the piece is probably foreign made and not real old. That does not mean it can't be a good user as long as you are happy with the fit and finish.

It's a Lodge. From the raised molder's mark and lack of "CO", ca. 1930s - 1940s. This design is still in use, although a raised Lodge logo now also appears on the lid. You may be able to order a replacement bail handle from them.

I was able to order a Bail from them for only 5 bucks. The shipping was 10 though! Oh well, at least I can now handle this baby easier when hot.
It hasn't arrived yet, I will let everyone know if it fits right.

Not to hijack this thread, but this one popped up on my local Craigslist a few days ago...it looks very similar. It's obviously quite rusty, but if it's old Lodge, it's probably salvageable, right? From the photo, it seems like mostly surface rust.

Chad,
It looks really similar to me. You would have to get a picture of the bottom to know the true age. Does it say CO on the bottom or made in the USA? These will help you know better when it was made, because as Doug mentioned above this model is still in use and being produced just with different logos and markings. The rust looks pretty bad to me. Look close and make sure it is only surface. Pitting is a pain and can effect value, but more importantly can effect the enjoyment of using the piece. I always pass on damaged pieces because I have noticed that I do not desire to use them very often after I have cleaned them up. Ask for a picture of the bottom and of the ears. Those are how I identified my piece and had Doug confirm for me, because I obviously had my doubts and am still learning. The legs on that piece look a little shorter to me, but again that just may be the picture. For reference I paid 40 for mine and feel pretty good about that since a new one is 100 or so and not near as quality or awesome as mine. Hope that helps. I will post a few pics of mine cleaned up when I get a chance. It is gonna be a great oven.

FYI - I sent a message, with a picture, to Lodge on their Twitter account about a pan I had and asked them if it could be one of their old ones. Here's their reply:

"@OTD_Colonel What a great skillet! Although we can't be sure, this could have been made by Lodge between 1910-1020."

Not a definitive answer, but when in doubt, it doesn't hurt to ask them. (And they seem to always reply to messages if you tag them.

I"m not really a collector, but would love another 12" for bigger gatherings or lending out. I have a modern (~2004?) Lodge 12" and this looks to be identical, even the shape of the rim of the lid and the ears. With the logo missing, I wasn't sure, though. However, most of the cheap imported camp ovens don't have that bead around the rim of the lid. I called the seller and left a message. Hopefully I can go look at it later this week; they're only about 25 minutes from me.
