cast iron newbie here - just got started about a month ago, and can't seem to get enough. this is the greatest hobby EVER!

i have two skillets i can't identify, and am hoping someone will recognize them. i'll post them separately for clarity. here's the first skillet. it has a smooth-as-glass cooking surface, an unbroken heat ring on bottom with no markings, and an 8 on the handle.

i'd sure appreciate any help identifying this beauty! thanks so much in advance. one day, i hope to know enough to return the favor to another newbie. :)

ID help please! skillet #2

here is skillet #2 ... again, thank you for your kind help!

this skillet is small, but HEAVY - 3.5 lbs. no pour spouts! that attracted my attention. it has a very smooth interior, and a rougher exterior. very thick bottom. no markings at all but a 7 on the handle.

Both are curiosities. #2 appears to be an import, probably Asian. The handle on #1 is similar to some I've seen before, but can't place at the moment.

Hi Doug,

Thank you for checking these two skillets out. I saw a picture of an Excelsior skillet with a pointed handle like skillet #2, but marked 'Excelsior' on the bottom, and with a different heat ring. Do you think it might be one of theirs?

I've got a skillet just like your #1. I've seen a couple of pictures of identical skillets here and on another forum, posted by folks looking for ID - no one seemed to recognize the manufacturer.

Hi Ginger,

sorry for the late reply! did you ever figure out who made the skillet? i am thinking it's Excelsior, but only because i saw a pointy handle in a picture of an Excelsior skillet. both our skillets may remain a mystery ... though the pan cooks up very well! :-)

It looks like it has a little pitting from cooking over a wood stove's eye--if so, that would cause me to wonder if it wasn't an older pan. Experts please correct me if I'm off base here.
