picked up this pot today at a garage sale. ask if they had any cast iron and the lady came back with this. the ring around it looks like it fits into a wooden stove. raised 8 on the bottom, about 8 inches tall, 3 legs. never seen one so I took it. any thoughts or ideas? is there a book for pots and cauldrons?

I smell a hot water pot. Many wood stoves came without a water heater on the end and this would work perfectly for heating it on the stove slowly or remove a lid and get it right down on the fire for fast heating - with a smoke ring to boot.

I suspect the ring, not the bottom of the pot is size 8. How does it match up with a size 8 skillet smoke ring?

It's called a rimmed pot. I think the rim was made to fit the eye of a wood stove. Not sure it was just for hot water as I think they're made for cooking.
