If it was made in the time period its characteristics suggest, I don't know what else it would be made of. Asking the seller if a magnet sticks to it or not would have confirmed.

There were no other bids. I got it for $6.60 I did not want to ask about a magnet, because if it was CI then the info would be added to the auction details and more bidding would have ensued. I wanted to keep it to myself. Everything about it says CI so i gambled. If its not, it will be my first loss/mistake.

It was listed as

Vintage government issue(army mess hall?) fry pan(is NOT cast iron)

"Vintage government issue" b/c "G" stands for government, I guess. At least they didn't try to make it "Griswold". Asking questions is sometimes a crapshoot, but I find sellers don't publish them more often than they do.

it has to be cast iron. ill bet the skillet is light because its an early skillet and not heavy like the later skillets so they thought it was made from some other metal. either way nice skillet. clean it up and introduce it to some bacon.

Scott, I think your shopping karma is hanging in there! That pan looks mid to late 19th century to me, but without handling it, that's a guess. Please tell us if a magnet sticks to it. (I love that G stands for government--some people have even crazier ideas than mine!)

This is a very nice skillet. except for inside the heat ring its as smooth as glass.
