Iron Mountain

Nice pan Bonnie....Curious about that heat pattern that shows on the bottom and inside. Assume it was there when you bought it. Probably will disappear when you give it a good cleaning.

Nice pan Bonnie, I am curious about the designs on the bottom also. How big is the pan? I'm fairly new to this. I've loved cast iron but I've never been one to know the old brands, etc. In my lifetime, if I found a pan that I liked, I bought it and that's about it.

Thanks all, I think rather than season it the seller just oiled it and set it on a burner for a little will. I'm sure those marks will come off after I strip it and season it. It is a big pan, it measures just shy of 13.5 inches across. I have an old Griswold slant logo 12 that is rough outside but has a smooth cooking surface. I really like the feel of the Iron Mountain handle better, I think I will part ways with the slant and keep this one as my user.

Great pan, great price. Fun set to put together, IMHO. I got started in collecting via an Iron Mountain skillet I picked up at a yard sale years ago - over time I have been lucky enough to acquire all the skillets along with the majority of the other IM pieces. Congrats on your find!

I haven't cleaned this skillet yet but I can see what caused the pattern. The seller cleaned the pan as best they could with a can of oven cleaner. After cleaning and oiling it they sat it on a gas burner. The pattern that shows up is where the oil got hot enough to polymerize. I am confident that a soak in the lye and a proper seasoning will remove the burner pattern. I will post another picture after seasoning. I have used my gas burner to season waffle irons with wooden handles that I don't want to put in the oven. The difference is that I continually move the piece around to ensure even heating.

Here it is after only 20 minutes in the lye tank. It wasn't heat damaged it was just not seasoned properly.

Very impressive Bonnie. It's a beautiful pan. I'm new to all this but not new to cooking with cast iron. I've been cooking with my favorite pan for 30+ years. Thank you for showing it to us. She sure is a beauty!
