ok so I found a John A. Goewey tea kettle on Craigslist the other day for $100 it looks to be in excellent shape. I'm just curious I found a little bit information about them but not much. the seller says these were made for the officer Corps in the Civil War. The only thing I found was a pattent from 1862 for the way the lid closes which would be pretty much the Civil War, I see it's in the gray book, and that Jeffrey R bought one at an auction. https://www.castironcollector.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3445 .
I guess my question is is there any truth to them being made just for officers? maybe narrow down the years this style was made? I see we're in business from the early 1800's to about 1879 or so.

Kev, that was really interesting--thanks for the links/pictures. What a great find! It's going to be a beauty when you get it all spiffed up--looking forward to your "after" pictures. :)
