Backstory... Great grandfather was a "molder" all his life in New England. I enjoy the historical photographs of the interior workings of the cast iron foundry's that have disappeared. One obvious observation... different era re: individual safety standards (OSHA)...perhaps why Great grandpa died from "softening of the brain". These folks worked hard.

Thank goodness the L.O.C. has preserved the visual historical record.

Jeffrey,

The footnote indicates a large foundry ... the Glazier Stove, Co. , Chelsea , Michigan. The vintage photo site "Shorpy" has a nice photo archive of some of these same photos...I believe their photos are also sourced from the Library of Congress.

Ron,

You are welcome... you may find this article of interest.... source: Cambridge Tribune, 21 OCT 1911. Obviously , the Medical community was beginning to suspect the workplace environment was part of the "big picture" in long term infirmities found in these working men and women. My great -Grandfather was a brass moulder / polisher. I'm sure the cast iron workers had their own groupings of employment related diagnoses.

"Secret"...indeed. Good to remember.

(apologies for the reproduction quality, it is the best I could manipulate).
