Lodge Raised Number 5?

I picked this up yesterday. It seems to be in better shape than the other no-notch raised #5 I already have.

But a couple of things about this one make me question whether it is a Lodge. The 5 on the handle is noticeably smaller. But, what really has me scratching my head, there is an incised 5 at the 6 o’clock position on the bottom (instead of a raised letter).

Has anybody seen that before on a no-notch Lodge?

Here are some more pictures to answer some of my questions and to raise a few more. Pictured: the new number 5 next to my old #5 ... and next to my sad little 3-notch #4. One showing the measurement. And one showing a better view of the incised number on the bottom. (I took it out of the lye bucket this morning to see if anything new showed up. It was a little cold last night, so it needs more time in the lye.)

The new one is about 1/8 of an inch larger than the #4.

Almost definitely not a Lodge. Unless it was made on the first day of training a new employee ...

Bubba: “Ok, Boss Man, I finished my first skillet. How does it look.”

Boss Man: “It looks great, except you put a 5 on a number 4.”

... or, more probably, it is an Asian knockoff or made by some small Foundry in the area (maybe in Columbus, GA - where I found it - or in Rome, GA (those guys loved to copy other people’s patterns.)

Doubtful as to an import. Bubba couldn't have put the 5 on the bottom, too. Just goes to show that not all makers adhered to an exact measurement standard for sizing. Whoever made it, it appears to be of decent quality.

Thanks, Doug. It does appear to be well made and I’m great shape.

The Foundry in Columbus made stoves. In fact, the store where I found this skillet, had several. They had everything from Franklin stoves to full-sized kitchen stoves. The next time I’m down there, I’m going to check out the eyes on those stoves and see if they have a #5 opening that matches this skillet.

BSR made a 5 S pan that is exactly the same size an a #4. My 5 S has a very visible ghost "4". You may have a transitional piece before they put the "S" behind the 5
