Looking at this deep Wagner ... ?

I'm at a barn. He has this deep Wagner. Wants $25 for it. Is this a chicken fryer? Shouldn't it have a lid?

And check out the picture of the barn door with skillets all over it. Very tempted by the raised #8 with a gate mark in the lower left corner. Same style as one I just bought a couple of weeks ago though, so I'm going to pass.

Deep skillet with no pour spouts = chicken fryer. Although many deep skillets do. Wouldn't use a lid to fry chicken, either, but lids are made for them.

Thanks Doug. There was another single notch Lodge that was in pretty good shape. The size seemed like an 8 but it was fairly clean on the bottom and there was no number. Nothing on the handle either, best I could tell. Strange.

Is that the matching lid for the skillet beside it? If it is I would jump on that like a fat hen on a June bug! I also like the Tobacco cutter pictured if the price is right.

Nope. I think it is a BSR lid ... but it fits.
I think I'm going to pass. It's too big for my e-tank. Ha!
One more question, would the gate mark on the raised 8 skillet indicate a recast?

So, does that mean my BSR chicken fryer with pour spouts, and the matching lid with ears, is not a chicken fryer?

Left. Drove 10 miles up the road. Couldn't resist. Offered him $30 for the Wagner and the no-number single-notch Lodge. He accepted. Now they're mine.

Taking a chance in them, though. Both might be pretty rough even after cleaning. Pictures to follow in a week or so.

Spurgeon, I'm glad you got the CF. You'll find a lot of uses for it. Standard #8 Wagner or Griswold lid fits it perfectly. I use mine all the time for rice, reheating soup, frying anything that likes to spatter outside a standard skillet and mess up my stovetop, as a DO when I want the width but not the depth of a 5 quart, browning ground meat, and if I'm about to scramble some eggs and it happens to be sitting on the stove I'm happy to use it for that too.

The actual proper lid for this particular Wagner 1088 (there are multiple versions) should be the C-8 glass lid. I understand the 1268 DO lid works as well on this smooth bottom, no pour spout version.

Doug, I’ve searched and searched and the only BSR chicken fryer I can find without spouts was post glass lids. Even found a CH cf with spouts. Can you provide a link that shows BSR cf’s without spouts before the switch to glass lid sizes?

A BSR 1987 catalog shows the chicken fryer/deep skillet offered with both iron and glass lids, and in both natural and polish finishes. The illustrations show the pan as having spouts for either glass or iron lid. A 3 qt. french fryer with basket shown adjacent has no pour spouts. I am not aware of a BSR CF (or iron lid for one) without pour spouts. You'll need to supply a photo.

I don't remember which one of the 75 sites I've gone to that had the pic. This, from post #2 is what has me confused:"Deep skillet with no pour spouts = chicken fryer." 'cause the BSR cf's all seem to have spouts except for that one pic I found and it wasn't good enough to verify conclusively.

Spurgeon, I've had my eye out for a C-8 lid for over a year. The few I've seen weren't cheap and came as a set with a a CF or DO making them all the more expensive. Since you seem to be on the hunt a lot more than I am chances are you'll find one much sooner than I will. I always make a point to watch for glass lids sitting by themselves in the hope that someone thought they were dumping a relatively common Corelle casserole lid as opposed to a vintage Wagner lid. If I see an antique booth full of ceramic and glass casserole dishes I give it a good once-over just for that reason.

To clarify my original reply to "Is this a chicken fryer? Shouldn't it have a lid?" A deep skillet with no pour spouts would be a chicken fryer because there would be no need to pour any cooked contents from it. It would not need a lid because frying in fat is not a covered cooking process. Yes, most deep skillets are called chicken fryers and they have pour spouts, but this one without spouts is specifically designed for chicken frying.

Hey, Spurgeon, I like that Wagner pan. I'm glad you got it, and I hope it cleans up well. I like my Wagner pieces a lot, although many people seem not to prefer them to other companies' CI. I think a pan like that would be very useful, and hope to find one someday myself. Good luck with your continued hunting!
