Lye Disposal

One thing I have yet to see on any tutorials or message boards: how do you dispose of your Lye solution after use? Say you have a 5 gallon Lye tank going and you finish up soaking all those skillets. Now what?

I imagine some snap on the lid and wait till next time, but I don't have the floor space to keep something like that there for long.

Obviously you don't pour it down the drain (I assume). How do you clean up? Also, how many loads of iron is a run of Lye solution good for?

Lye is the main ingredient in most drain cleaners. When diluted it is not a problem for septic tanks or the sewer system. If you have a wash tub, turn the water on and pour the lye into a dead pillow case to filter out the gunk. This is also OK in a SS sink. It takes 4 hands with gloves.

When the pillow case has drained, put it in the garbage & rinse the container down the drain. Done.

Your results will tell you when it needs to be refreshed.
